Startled by the entire event, Sonia stayed close to Nikki as they walked away from the scene. She tried to put together in her mind the how and the why of Scott’s death, but nothing added up.

“Do you think someone did this because of what happened to Marlo?” Sonia looked over at Nikki.

“I have no idea.” Nikki frowned. “But you heard what that officer said. He didn’t think I should be around the crime scene. Me being at the scene of two homicides in as many days doesn’t look very good, does it?”

“Don’t worry about that.” Sonia patted her shoulder. “You’ve done nothing wrong.”

“Maybe not, but Scott just threatened me not even an hour ago. How do you think that’s going to look?” Nikki sighed as she looked down at the dogs that remained close to her side as she walked.

“No one has to know about that.” Sonia narrowed her eyes.

“What if someone saw us, though?” Nikki shook her head. “Oh, this is just awful. How can this be happening? First Marlo, and now Scott?”

“It is terrible.” Sonia squeezed her shoulder then looked towards the apartment complex. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t get any information from the maintenance man.”

“That’s all right.” Nikki shook her head. “I don’t know where to look next, now that Scott is no longer a possibility.”

“Well, that’s not exactly true.” Sonia paused at the entrance of the apartment complex and then continued walking. “Just because he was killed, that doesn’t mean that he isn’t the one who killed Marlo. In fact, maybe he was killed because of that.”

“Then someone must know that he was the murderer.” Nikki frowned. “If they know that, then why wouldn’t they have turned him in?”

“That’s a very good question. Maybe they didn’t have proof? Maybe they were worried that it would incriminate themselves?” Sonia scrunched up her nose. “Something smells fishy about this entire situation. I think there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye.” Sonia picked up Princess and followed behind Nikki as they walked in the direction of Sonia’s car. As she heard sirens wail in the distance, her stomach flipped. It was too late for Scott, but maybe they could find something that would lead them not only to Marlo’s killer, but Scott’s as well.

“It appears so. But what, is the question?” Nikki smiled as they approached her friend, Gina’s café.

“How about some tea?” Sonia offered. “Something to relax your nerves.”

“Good idea.” They all crossed the road to the café.

Nikki often took the dogs she walked to the café. Gina always made sure there were water bowls for her customers’ dogs set up outside.

“Is this okay?” Sonia chose one of the two empty tables available. It was a table for four away from the other tables that had customers at them. They sat down in the chairs as the dogs happily took turns drinking from the water bowl. Princess went first and the other two waited patiently. Nikki and Sonia smiled at the sight. Once
